My Tax Reform

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Michael Callaway

One of the things that makes it hard for me to support any politician is that despite what they say on the campaign trail, none of them can truly deliver what they promise.  The reasons are vast and someday I will blog more about that.  What I want to do right now is talk about the change that I believe would be good for America.

The first and probably the most important one is our current tax code. Our tax system has been written in a way that makes it confusing and I believe that it is done deliberately.  No one likes to pay taxes and we all wish that they were lower, however, there are some government programs that are essential and without tax revenue it would be impossible to fund those programs.

Keith Olbermann’s Fall from Grace

Posted on 15 September 2008 by Michael Callaway

Back in 1992 when I graduated from high school and went to college, I fell in love with the best morning sports show in the world, ESPN Sports Center.  This show not only gave me great sports coverage, it presented sports in a way that had never been done before.  It was funny, it was engaging, and it was memorable.  One of the key components of Sports Center was Keith Olbermann, and he was awesome.

I remember when Olbermann left Sports Center. While I still enjoyed the legacy he left behind, the show was not the same.  Life simply was not as good without Keith Olbermann at ESPN. You might be wondering, how did Mr. Olbermann change from the greatest person in the world to someone that Mike wants to slap?  MSNBC... that is how.

Walking on Water

Posted on 04 September 2008 by Michael Callaway

Now this story that I am about to tell is 100% true, no lie here.  I grew up in fairly conservative religious home so faith had always been a part of my life.  One summer when I was 14 or 15 my sister and I went to Guatemala to visit our grandparents and other family that we have down there.  My grandmother’s home is very large and in her back yard there is a pool.

One Sunday during that summer we went to the Union Church where my grandparents go and the sermon was about Jesus walking on the water and how Peter was able to do the same.  Now, maybe the pastor was saying something different then what I heard, perhaps he was talking about walking on the waters of life or something like that.  Anyway, what I heard was that if you had enough faith then you would be able to do the same.

Surprise VP Pick for McCain

Posted on 30 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

Well let me go on record as saying I was completely wrong in who I thought John McCain was going to pick.  I was hopeful for Mike Huckabee but thought it would be Mitt Romney, I know people were talking about the governor of Minnesota or of Florida but I did not think that was the way he was going to go.

As I looked at the choices I really did not see how any of them, even my beloved Huckabee would really help McCain.  Here is what I felt John needed to do to be elected President:

2008 Democratic Convention Review

Posted on 29 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

Just in case you do not know, I am a pretty solid Republican, have been my whole life, so I would suggest you take my views on the Democratic Convention with a grain of salt.  As I watched Obama speech I must say that I loved everything he had to say.  I thought what he said about taxes was right, his approach with guns was right, I agree with him on the issue of gay people having the same hospital and tax benefits of heterosexual people, I liked how he talked about individual responsibility.  I liked everything he said and I doubt that the Republican Convention will be as well put together as the Democratic one was.

The problem for me is I do not think it can happen.  I do not believe that there is a single government program that any President, Republican or Democrat is prepared to cut no matter how poorly it is doing.  I do not think that the President or their staff will go line by line through the budget and cut the pork spending because one Senator’s pork is another Senator’s essential program.  I do not believe that our tax code will be reformed because everyone and I mean everyone, enjoys their own deductions and are so beholden to them that even if the new system is better they will feel like they are being cheated.

The Good News and Bad News About Joe Biden

Posted on 26 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

I could not be more relieved today when I heard that Joe Biden will be Barack Obama’s choice for Vice President.  My belief has been that there is a 100% chance that the next President will be either a Democrat or a Republican and it is 50/50 as to which side will win, I want to see the best candidates from both parties because one of them will be President.

Joe Biden is one of the members of the senate that I really respect, I always used to judge politicians on how well they did on Meet The Press with Tim Russert and Joe Biden always did well.  While I may not always have agreed with him I could understand where he came from because he was that good at explaining himself.  Another thing I like about him is he could admit when he was wrong and he answered the questions honestly.

Sports Announcers: The Necessary Evil

Posted on 21 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

In my last post I talked about how much I love the Olympics and it is true, I do.  However, there is a part of the Olympics that drives me crazy and I am talking about the announcers.  To be fair, I rarely like the announcers in any sport, John Madden in for Sunday Night Football drives me to drink sometimes.  “The team that scores the most points will win the game.”

I realize that the announcers are a necessary evil and when there is no sound it can be annoying.  I think it is the excessive talking that bothers me the most followed by the over hyping.  Every athlete is the best athlete in the world, be it Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Michael Phelps, the list goes on and on.  My favorite is when they will say not only is he the best in the world but he is the best in the universe.  Really?  How many athletes have you been able to cover outside of this little ball of soil and water that we call Earth?

The Olympics: What Could Have Been and What Is

Posted on 18 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

For the last few days I have been watching hours upon hours of Olympic coverage.  We did not leave the house all day Saturday or all day Sunday because of the games, of course it did not help that it was over a hundred degrees here in North Texas.  During this time we watched beach volleyball, cycling, basketball, swimming and of course gymnastics, the track and field events will be coming up soon and I am quite excited about that.

However, as exciting as watching the men’s four by one hundred swim relay was, the Olympics will never be able to achieve the dreams of French nobleman Pierre Fredy, Baron de Coubertin.  He had hoped that the spirit of unity would solve world problems such as hunger and war, sadly this will never be the case.  There was war before the Olympics began on 08/08/08 and there will be war after they end, ironically on the day of the best opening ceremony ever a new war started when Russia invaded Georgia.

It’s Time for Some Campaigning

Posted on 15 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

If you have not watch the Jib Jab cartoon it is a must see.  Go to www.jibjab.com and click on “Time For Some Campaignin”.  Then come back and finish reading this blog.

Satire is always difficult for people to understand, we see this all the time even outside of politics.  Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” is not a patriotic song, and yet it gets played every Fourth of July when the fireworks go off.  Billy Idol’s “White Wedding” is not a celebration of marriage, yet it gets played all the time at weddings.

The Pick Up Line Faces the MOOB DM

Posted on 12 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

If one needs proof that humanity is lost, the pick up line is exhibit A.  Guys are in bars, guys want to meet women, the pick up line is the way to break the ice.

I have often pondered why women do not try the pick up line themselves?  It would be so much more affective in your hands.  I think I would be rather flattered if some strange girl came up and tried one.  Here is the way I think you ladies could try it.  A lady comes up to me and asks, “Are you demonic?”

Defend Your Faith

Posted on 05 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

One day while I was trolling through the bowels of the Internet I came upon a Website that said that Christianity is a delusion.  It also said rather boldly, I might add, that their 15 minute video would completely shatter my delusional beliefs.  Being intrigued by the prospect that my whole world view could be shattered in 15 minutes, I accepted the challenge.

Here is their argument:

[…If you knew an adult who still believed in Santa Claus you would think that they were delusional and indeed they would be.  It is cute if a child does but if an adult does it is a delusion.  Continue Reading
