Too Crazy to Debate

Posted on 04 November 2008 by Michael Callaway

One thing I have observed during this Presidential election and by blogging in general is that there are people who are simply too crazy to debate.  Now, I do not care if you are religious or not, if you are Conservative or Liberal, or if you believe global warming is man made or part of a natural cycle.  What I like to see is someone who can articulate why they believe what they believe and will not get angry if you challenge them.  I would rather have a fierce debate with someone I disagree with who is rational then talk with someone who agrees with me but is irrational.

No matter what your views are, it is possible that you or someone you know is simply too crazy to debate.  Now, I do not expect that everyone should be an expert on all things that they believe; there are some things that I know to be true that I can not prove.  I also feel like people can become overwhelmed with facts and statistics that it blinds them to the obvious.  As Winston Churchill famously said, there are three kinds of lies:  lies, damn lies and statistics.

Bad Economy Woes

Posted on 03 November 2008 by Jenni Hammitt

Everyone is feeling the impact of this struggling (in some cases downward spiraling ) economy. It is hitting us in the pocket book, and we are having to change our way of life and cutting back to make things work. That alone sucks. However, I was dreading the day where the businesses I frequent would have to make drastic changes or worse - close their doors to the public.

Small business are taking a big hit right now. Things haven’t exactly been “good” for them over the past year, but now things are even more dire. Money is tight, consumers are watching their spending and they do not have the access to the credit they may need to stay afloat.

Sarah Palin: Fashionista or Poseur?

Posted on 31 October 2008 by Rachel Longo-Tosoian

This past week, everybody and their dog have been up in arms about Sarah Palin and the controversy over her brand new wardrobe. Spending $150,000 on suits, shoes, boots, even a makeup artist and hair stylist is not sitting too well with the population. Spending that money from the Republican National Committee, some from Republican supporters, is not the best way to promote oneself.

Looking back at photographs of Palin from when she was campaigning in Alaska, anyone can see the difference; it is like night and day. Frumpy sweaters, and dull coloured suits; Sarah Palin was less appealing than she is now.

An Election Song - 2008

Posted on 31 October 2008 by Michael Callaway

Here is a little song I wrote
I hope you sing it note for note
Don’t Worry, Vote Johnny

In the world there is some trouble
A young Obama could make it double
Don’t worry, vote Johnny, vote Johnny now

Economic Crisis May Be Good for Something

Posted on 30 October 2008 by Lisa Pawlowski

Over the summer, back when everyone was more concerned with the price of gas than the government deficit or the economic health of our country, I stood behind a woman at a cashier cage at a Wal-Mart gas station. The thing I found remarkable was that, while the lady was dressed very plainly in her nylon knit pants and black, soft-soled, service shoes, she had a Louis Vuitton purse hooked on her arm. The bag looked large and expensive and I studied it closely to see if it was counterfeit. After all, the woman didn’t look wealthy and a bag like that can run, I’m told, around $1000.

As far as I could tell, the purse looked like a real Louis Vuitton. You see, I had plenty of time to study the handbag. The woman in front of me kept trying to pay for the gas with credit cards. She handed the cashier three different kinds only to be told by the man behind the counter, “The card company tells me I should confiscate it.” And he chuckled lightly as he handed the last card back to her.

Elections Don’t Alleviate Personal Responsibility

Posted on 29 October 2008 by Rachel Horton Raya

Next week’s presidential election gives me serious heartburn – not because I’m concerned one way or another who is going to win. That’s been obvious for months now. I frankly think I could blindfold myself and push a button in the voter booth on Election Day, and it wouldn’t make a darn bit of difference. Call me a cynic. That’s the way I feel.

What gives me heartburn is this: Whoever wins the White House is facing perhaps the most treacherous uphill climb in American presidential history. The economy is faltering. Our health care system is woefully inadequate. American workers are losing jobs right and left. Immigration is out of control, and no one in power seems to know what to do about it.

My Plus-Sized Halloween Costume Conundrum

Posted on 28 October 2008 by Jenni Hammitt

Halloween is probably my favorite secular holiday. As a recovering Goth-a-holic (or a Corporate Goth if you will), I love the opportunity to bust out the “bat purse,” buy a new pair of wings, and string up George the spider in my office so that when the lab door opens he floats up and down. I also stock up on black roses. I love this holiday, but this year I became very depressed when I tried to buy a Halloween costume.

Okay folks here is the deal. I’m not a small girl. I’m short, but I’m not exactly skinny. However, I have been losing some weight and I decided to bite the bullet and buy one of those cute costumes at the Halloween Store. I was blonde at the time (i've since changed) and I really had my little heart set on being Alice in Wonderland. I stopped by the costume shop on my way home from work, and after a little looking I found three costume options. The first was the “skank” Alice. It was like a bikini top and a little skirt. Uh yeah…so aside from being jealous that I would never be able to pull that off, really that just isn’t my look. The other two seemed more reasonable.
