timothy_f_geithnerSome will question if failing to pay taxes in the past should disqualify Mr. Geitner from the post of Treasury secretary. The critics will say with the IRS reporting to the Treasury secretary it would be like the fox guarding the hen house. Others have suggested if he could not figure how to do his taxes how could he do a good job as Treasury secretary?

The Media’s Political Double Standard

picresized_1232607694_twofaceI can plainly remember Clinton’s first inauguration. Part of the reason might be because my boss at the time was a huge supporter of his and wanted to rush home at lunch time so she could watch it. She invited me along and we sat in her living room eating BBQ beef sandwiches on TV trays while we watched Bill Clinton take the oath. Afterward, I remember admiring the cadence and eloquence of Maya Angelou’s voice as she read her poem she’d written just for the occasion.

Change Has Come to the White House

Someone on the White House marketing staff is very proud of himself/herself right now, and they should be. President Elect Obama’s website Change.gov was transferred over to WhiteHouse.gov during Obama’s inaugural address.

So in truth, Change HAS come to the White House. Probably via ftp.

President Obama’s staff is already busy blogging. Visit the White House blog to keep up with all the change.

Obama: Maybe He Can

Obama 2008I have been watching Obama since he won in November of last year and I have to say that I am impressed. I probably will be voting Republican again in 2010 and 2012, so don’t get too excited with my statement. However, I will say that given the size of his victory he has been far more willing to negotiate with others then the Clintons did in 1992.

Obama has made very solid cabinet picks and has said all the right things in his interviews. I look forward to his inauguration and expect it to be up there with the greats like Lincoln, Kennedy and Reagan. I am pleased to see that he has been balanced in his approach since becoming President – Elect and I look forward to watching the left become angry at him when he turns out not to be as radical as they thought he would.

A Savior in the White House?

oprahOprah Winfrey is without a doubt one of the most powerful women in the world. With a whisk of her magic wand an unknown author can become a best seller. Like the old E.F. Hutton commercials used to say, when Oprah speaks, people listen.

In September of 2005 Oprah selected “A Million Little Pieces” to her Book Club. The story is a heart warming story about a man overcoming his addictions. The book was originally published in 2003 but became a best seller after it got the Oprah seal of approval.

With a Name like Blagojevich, He Has to be Good

blagojevichrodSure, Rod Blagojevich may have tried to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat to the highest bidder and I do not doubt that he and his wife are foul mouthed people. However, despite all of that, I think he should stay on has governor of Illinois and continue to serve the people who elected him, twice.

Now, some of you ninnies out there may say, “Hey, he is corrupt, he must go.” Sure he is corrupt, but he has a keen economic mind and in these tough times that is what we need. He was able to look at the situation he was in and realize that the thing that he had was worth a lot of money to someone that simply just give it away was foolish. That is an economic genius at work people!

It’s Alive! The GOP is ALIVE!

While the GOP sure looked bad on Nov 4th, there is still hope that the Grand Old Party will not be completely dead in 2009. With the run off election victory of Saxby Chambliss over Jim Martin in Georgia and the possible victory of Norm Coleman defeating Al Franken in Minnesota, this will mean that the Republicans will have 42 Senators and will be able to use the filibuster if necessary.

For those of you who are not sure what the filibuster is let me give you a brief synopsis: In the House of Representatives there are rules of debate, how long the person can speak and how many speakers on an issue. These rules are agreed to before hand with the majority party getting the greater say in how those rules will be structured. After the debate is done, the bill has a vote and that is it. In the Senate it does not work that way, there can be unlimited amount of debate. One person can talk for hours and hours once he or she has been recognized and can defer to any college he or she wants.
