Wake Up, Church! The Time Has Come for Pastors of Online Ministry

Have you noticed that the larger churches have made some serious upgrades to their website in 2009? Churches now have Twitter accounts, Facebook fan pages, and blogs. Their members who are getting it done in the workplace are stepping up and bringing their local churches kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

Content that used to be impossible to find is now making it to the Web. Sermons, skits, teachings, music, conferences, testimonies, signs, and wonders are nudging their way toward mainstream availability.

Instant Viewpoint Goodies from the Social Web

palin

Facebook and Twitter have made my life easier in many ways. Yes, I reap the benefits of social media. I keep in touch with friends and family. I keep up on things I don’t have the time to actually sit through. I share pictures and stories. There is one thing that I interesting about social media and controversy: it makes the debate, discussion and even trash talk instant.

Internet Picture Publishing Etiquette

Today I got a phone call from one of the guys at P3. Apparently, the owner of one of the establishments we work in has requested that we remove all pictures of his establishment from his and the owner’s Facebook account, our show video and the web site. I guess some of the patrons were upset that there were “embarrassing” (for lack of a better word)…etc pictures of them on the internet. They have threatened to not return as long as the owner allows us to use pictures from there for public viewing. We are complying; however, I just don’t get it.

Influential Digg Users Make the Switch to Mixx

Digg is in the process of banning its most influential users, the top 100 Diggers. This 1% of all Digg users account for 30%+ of the site’s traffic and focus. These are the power users who can send a million visits to a site simply by submitting a digg. And now Digg wants them gone. Banned or soon to be banned power users include zaibatsu, msaleem, mklopez, skored, makimaki, and more.

The rationale is this: Digg is making a play to increase its value to $300 million, and the best method they could come up with was to level the playing field so that more users could have more influence. So the word has gone out that at least the top 10 Diggers will be banned soon, with more to follow.

Parents Don’t Get Next Generation Socializing

A few weeks ago, while driving in my car, I was flipping through the radio stations and acme across a DJ on a very angry rant.

This particular DJ was commenting on yet another report that kids today are overweight, under stimulated and just plain lazy. Sure, these facts are probably all correct; kids today spend too much time playing video or computer games, and not enough time doing anything physical, and as a result of that, combined with eating unhealthy, they pack on the pounds quickly. However, that is not what got me angry. The DJ proceeded to tell the listeners that today’s generation of kids do not socialize, that they spend too much time on Facebook, MySpace and MSN chatting with friends.

Public Relations: Not as Glamorous as Samantha Jones Wants You to Believe

The media can be informative, but the media can also be deceiving. Ever since I was a wee lass, I have always been told not to believe everything I read or see; be critical, and do not take everything so literally. Unfortunately, the Hollywood bug had bitten at a young age, and boy did it ever sink its teeth into me. Glamour to the right; lavish lifestyles to the left. Everywhere I looked, there was some kind of celebrity or rising starlet who caught my eye.

After years of watching Sex and the City, idolizing the lives of the four women, one of the characters drastically stood out to me; Samantha Jones. She owns her own Public Relations company, rubs elbows with the best of the best in New York City, throws first class parties and attends her fair share of them. She knows all the best hot spots in the city and has a Rolodex overflowing with names and numbers of the biggest, best and most elite of New York. (more…)

Facebook Status Updates: It’s Complicated

Facebook Status UpdatesWe all love to hate it – the status and feed updates from Facebook are what get us through that boring workday. I thank Facebook for making me even nosier than I was before. “Those two are in a relationship now?”, “OMG! They broke up!”, “Wow, he got pretty wasted this weekend.” Facebook tells me everything I could ever want to know about people I barely talk to.

The constant flow of information from the feed on the Facebook main page is enough to overwhelm the busiest of minds. But is it necessary to update your relationship status on Facebook? Your friends should already know that you are currently dating someone, and I’m more than certain the people you just collecting as friends could really care less. (more…)
