Hurricane Summary from the Weather Fan

Posted on 21 September 2008 by Daniel Dessinger

So first it was Hurricane Gustav and then it was Hurricane Ike. I must admit, I'm literally a weather fanatic and almost semi-addicted to weather; particularly when it's severe. It seems, to me, that we've had some major weather in the last few months and it seems to be only getting worse and worse. I'm 31 years old and growing up, I seem to recall hurricanes only hitting Florida or the east coast. Doesn't it seem, lately, that hurricanes always make a direct target of the Gulf Coast. I wonder why that is?

Hurricane Ike, albiet it wasn't as dangerous as it was forecasted for Dallas, turned out to be quite a monster for the Texas coast. What is it with my fascination about weather? Maybe it's because I grew up in Oklahoma for most of my life and we had at least four to five tornado warnings per Spring season. Maybe it's the simplicity of knowing that humans have absolutely no control over the weather... or do we? As we all know, Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston and Houston as a strong Category 2 hurricane with storm surge of over 15 feet in some areas. The size of Ike was so massive that at time of its landing, it could cover the entire state of Texas.

Ike had me on my laptop for almost 14 consecutive hours. I had to create video forecasts for my podcast, my blog and my YouTube subscribers (believe it or not, some of my most viewed videos on YouTube are regarding weather.) The fact that tropical storm winds could reach Dallas, a landlocked metropolis, simply amazed me. Hurricanes are called by many weather enthusiasts as the eye of God, but I really beg to differ as I don't think God has anything to do with these savage monsters.

Nonetheless, my heart and my thoughts go out to Houston and Galveston and even parts of Louisiana that were absolutely devastated by this storm. In the future, I hope the "not-so-smart" Texans who thought they could just ride out the storm learned a very important lesson... when the government tells you to leave, leave. Now before I get hate comments, let it be known I speak to those who COULD leave and refused to not leave.

In summary, we Texans need to show our support for our fellow statesmen. If you'd like to donate food, groceries, products, and money, please make sure you contact the local American Red Cross.
