Great post. I can relate whole-heartedly with your situation because I really don’t want to grow up.

Just thinking about all the responsibilities I will have to take on is quite frightening, and really, who needs more on their plate?

Excellent article Brandy. I know exactly how you feel. The increased demand for secondary education and beyond has caused a shift in the social structure that predisposes towards a prolonged “quasi-adult” period in our lives. Im a perfect example. Im 26, and I have never held a 40 hr a week job. Ive been in college from 18 till now (Im currently a third yr medical student). This, combined with the fact that the student lifestyle is for many not conducive to raising a family, has raised a generation of people who have enjoyed the benefits of singlness/childlessness. So what if we may or may not want to “move on”? the “quasi-adult” lifestyle is just as viable and legitimate as any other, and traditional social values will have to make allowance for those who chose it.

You can watch Drake & Josh with your kids and it’s ok. I get to watch things like High School Musical so I can stay “in touch” with my dance students. haha

p.s. Thanks for getting the Toys-R-Us song stuck in my head, it’s a great reprieve from adult noise.

I couldn’t agree more! I went to the store the other day and this woman said out loud something along the lines of “…blah, blah, blah I’m old!” I couldn’t help but look because I find myself wondering when I will be “old.” I am a very young 33-years (young) and although I have a house full of children and I have to pay bills, try to save money for Christmas, etc, I still find time to laugh and smile and act “childish.”

I think that is actually one of the benefits of having children–I can watch Drake & Josh on a weeknight and run around the park and make up my own silly dances (My daughter calls my moves the “Daddy Dance”) and still be a responsible adult.

Next time someone says act your age, stop what you’re doing, look them dead in the eye and say:

“I don’t want to grow up, I’m a Toys-R-Us kid, they have a million toys at Toys-R-Us that I can play with…from bikes to trains to video games, they’re the biggest toy store there is! (Gee Whiz!!!) I don’t want to grow up cause maybe if I did, I wouldn’t be a Toys-R-Us kid!!!”
