Movie Review: Breach
Posted on 16 April 2008 by Ashleigh Holmes
You know a film is forgettable when you open your DVD player a week later, find the DVD there and think to yourself, “Oh yeah, I guess I did watch that.”
That’s what I did with Breach. I remember seeing the trailers in theaters and thinking it looked intriguing enough, but as with so many films that I don’t get around to seeing at the theater, I completely forgot about it by the time it came to DVD.
Chris Cooper is adequately mean, stern and creepy as the traitorous FBI agent, Robert Hanssen. I’m not real familiar with Ryan Phillippe’s previous works, but I thought his portrayal of a young, up and coming hopeful agent was convincing. Laura Linney’s performance was about as forgettable as the film, which is probably part of the reason I wasn’t moved by the film. The performances aren’t stellar; they’re merely, to repeat myself, adequate.
I don’t remember the trailers really highlighting the fact that it was a true story, so that made the experience a little more intriguing, but for it to be a film about spies and espionage, I expected more heart-pounding, pulse-pumping moments, and there just weren’t any.
I also expected there to be lots more conflict to be resolved in a gasp-inducing denouement; instead there was a disappointing “wet noodle” of an ending. But then it was based on a true story, so maybe the capturing of an international spy really is that anti-climactic and not as dramatic as Hollywood would have its adoring fans believe.
