Starbucks WiFi is Affordable… Finally

Posted on 16 February 2008 by Daniel Dessinger

Starbucks wifi is finally affordableOne of my Twitter friends, DougH, notified me a couple days ago that Starbucks is ditching T-Mobile and moving on to greener pastures. If AT&T can be considered greener pastures, that is. The original story released on WiFiNetNews says that all Starbucks Card holders will receive two free hours of wifi access per visit with purchase of caffeinated yummies. On top of that, even the hourly rate will be cheaper.

Working from Starbucks just became a lot more feasible. I've been an unhappy T-Mobile supporter for the past few years, resenting Verizon's service but patting myself on the back for getting the best deal for minutes. Now that Starbucks has made the jump to AT&T, I'm much more likely to consider a cell phone switch as well. It's like when Wal-Mart recently stopped carrying HD-DVD and chose to carry BluRay exclusively. Suddenly, the atmosphere shifts and the world views BluRay as the undisputed champion of HD. AT&T just bit a chunk off the hide of T-Mobile, and with the iPhone currently under an exclusive partnership agreement, AT&T's looking pretty sweet.

Thank you, Starbucks, for FINALLY listening to me. I had created a small blog a year ago for the sole purpose of complaining about Starbucks' expensive wifi service, and now they have changed. This ranks among my top 10 best business surprises ever. And that says a lot.

Keep hope alive. Enjoy your Starbucks with bigger badder better cheaper wifi.

Now…..if only I could parlay the unused wifi minutes into a cheaper cup of coffee, I’d be set. I may have to continue drinking my Dr. Pepper and enjoying my WiFi from my car in Starbuck’s parking lot.
