Obama Will Be the End of Us All

Posted on 20 June 2008 by Daniel Dessinger

Barak ObamaAre you ready to see history in the making? Get your popcorn ready (nod to T.O.). The world stage is about to take yet another step toward the End. Reading this post could be hazardous to your health, as this could get really ugly if certain people comment, so be prepared.

First, know this: I will vote for Barack Obama. But that's only because I believe John McCain to be irrelevant to the most pressing issues facing our country and the world.

If it weren't for George W. Bush, Obama would be an excellent choice for President. He would steer the country to alternative energy initiatives that Bush's administration only paid lip service to. But thanks go GWB, Obama will find himself properly positioned for a much more devastating long-term effect.

What did Bush do so wrong?

1. Weapons of Mass Destruction
For starters, Bush has lied every step of the way. Let's not pretend any further. We all know that WMDS were NOT the reason for the Iraq War. Bush's advisors are extremely energy conscious and have kept him informed of the state of peak oil and the coming economic devastation that will result from dwindling oil supplies. It would be fair to say that oil is the central motivating factor of the Bush presidency. It has influenced more initiatives, actions, and inactions than all other factors.

As mentioned briefly before, Bush invaded Iraq to secure the oil supply. Not because he's greedy, but because he knows what many of you don't: there's not much left when you look at total availability from the historical perspective.

2. Immigrant Detainment Camps
Add the detainment camps Bush has built to house a potential influx of illegal immigrants he's expecting once the peak oil shit hits the fan. Mexicans will come fleeing to the United States believing that the situation is significantly better here. Bush already has camps ready to imprison them.

3. Homeland Security Fudges the Constitution / Privacy Laws
There's no other way to say it. I'm completely 100% opposed to violating the privacy of citizens. Am I willing to risk the possible existence of terrorist cells in the country to maintain my rights? Yes. Yes I am. I am not going to promote the persecution of innocent citizens simply because they match a profile or they have communicated with someone in Pakistan. It is NEVER okay to detain someone without evidence of a crime. NEVER. The guilty should go free before we lock up one innocent man or woman. Err on the side of not imprisoning innocent civilians.

4. Stockpiling Oil for Military Use Only
While it is reassuring to know that the U.S. military will not fade to impotence over night, it's also disturbing to note that Bush has bought so many millions of barrels of oil and stockpiled them for military use that he is somewhat responsible for driving up the price of oil and because we don't really want to have a military that runs smoothly when the rest of the country is dead in the water. If there's no more oil and the armed forces have the only supply, and we have detainment camps set up across the country, we're a short step away from a military state. I'm out. Catch me later.

I don't like the thought of being one terrorist strike away from a military state. I don't like knowing that George Bush has positioned the U.S. to clamp down like a vice and mistreat its citizens because it has the legal authority to. And I haven't even touched on REAL ID. Get ready for more government control, tracking, and monitoring. So much for privacy.

You may be thinking to yourself: that's nice and all, but what the heck does this all have to do with Barack Obama?

Peak oil sets the stage for global economic depression. How severe it gets is anyone's guess, and I'm not going to venture one here. But before the world runs out of oil, there will be opportunities for wars and terrorism over remaining supplies. So, what's the solution?

The most likely solution is a unified energy coalition, spearheaded by Barack Obama and Al Gore. For those of you who think Al Gore was cheated out of the presidency, have no fear. He will likely have the opportunity to run a new coalition - the UN or NATO of oil and other energy resources. That could potentially outstrip the U.S. President in global power and influence.

Someone has to manage the remaining resources and get nations to agree to a peaceful resolution of oil disputes. Someone who has proven their long-term commitment to this "inconvenient truth."

So, does the Obama/Gore combo frighten you?

It doesn't really frighten me. I have no idea what to expect of a post-oil economy and culture. But what I do know is that Bush has prepared the country to be ruled with an iron fist if necessary, for its own safety, of course. Another terrorist attack or two and America's own citizens will be crying out stupidly for greater action.

Bush's big military machine and Barack's energy coalition have the power to place tremendous power into the hands of a few.

Consider this a fair warning. No, consider this a prediction. I don't know the details, but I've seen the signs. Time will tell. Of course, if this prediction comes true, I won't want to brag about it.

No matter what the future holds, do something to be prepared. Something.

For the record, it’s okay to disagree with me publicly. none of CultureFeast’s writers are required to share the same opinions and beliefs. It is a feast by bringing diverse opinions to the table and discussing them like reasonable adults.

I fully expect someone to be offended by the title to this post. Some will automatically consider this post full of conjecture and paranoia. I invite you to make your case, but I submit to you that while the possible outcome may be different, the steps leading up to the outcome were neither fabricated or exaggerated.

I agree with most of this post although I disagree with the title.

Bush is exactly the answer you need when asked “Why has America failed?”

Obama will bring us back to where we should be. McCain might as well, dunno.

There really is no threat to running out of oil in our lifetime. Cheap, easy to reach oil is running out, however we will not run out of oil for more then a hundred years.

What is raising the price is not the evil speculator or greedy oil companies, what is really raising the price is demand in countries like India and China has gone through the roof. 15 years ago there were entire villages in both of those countries where no one used a car. When Nike was trying to sell shoes in China they said that if every Chinese person just bought one pair of shoes they could never supply that kind of demand.

What both Democrats and Republicans need to do is craft policies that encourage industry to use less energy and invest in alternatives to oil and gas. Cities like Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston should have been investing in a light rail system like Denver has years ago. When we lived there at the time the complaint was that it was a waste of money and no one would use it. When gas was 89 cents a gallon that seemed to be the case, it is being used now and should be the preferred method regardless of gas price.

I really wish it was Al Gore’s fault, or Saudi Arabia’s fault, or big oil’s fault or because the military is hoarding so much. The fact is it is our fault for being short sighted and not making hard choices in the 1970’s and 80’s when we first faced the energy crises. It is far more fun to spin exotic conspiracy theories then to actually do something like invest in light rail, raise efficiency standards or consider other sources of power. We sound like that person that says they can never loose weight and have tried every gimmick product out there, except the one they know will work, diet and exercise.

Running out of cheap, easy to produce oil is not something to shrug off. The ramifications are potentially devastating. What happens when oil production no longer meets demand? Prices rise. A 3% reduction in production leads to triple the price of oil per barrel. We’ve seen that happen over the past two years. Another 3% reduction could put oil at $400 per barrel, a near catastrophic occurrence.

President Bush commissioned a special team to report on the status of oil availability and to project the status of oil in the future. Bob Hirsch was responsible for creating and delivering this report, as one of the foremost experts in the country. You can Google the Hirsch Report and read a summary online.

Bob Hirsch was just interviewed on CNBC recently and asked about his projections of oil. He stated that $500/barrel is very possible within the next 3-5 years. That is more than a tripling of today’s price. And what he doesn’t outright say is what effect this will have on the global economy.

If you the consumer have to pay $12 per gallon to power your car, you just took a huge pay cut from your job. Airlines could go bankrupt. WalMart could suffer severe losses. The cost of shipping, transport, and commuting would be so prohibitive that our country would likely enter a major recession.

There ARE potential alternatives, such as converting coal into liquid petroleum fuels. We do not have enough factories or equipment online to do this, however. You can’t just swallow the party line they feed you because there are always ulterior motives at play. The practicality of actually bringing another fuel alternative online would require years of preparation. That means a good sized recession, possibly even depression, is in order before a suitable alternative is made available to the masses.

You can quote 100 years of oil left if you want, but if the last 85 years of oil are so expensive that we can’t afford to use it, does that really matter? Once demand has so exceeded supply, prices rise beyond profitable use and it becomes useless to a certain percentage of the world who can no longer afford it.

We’re not just talking about fuel. We’re talking about plastics production. Plastics are made with oil. There are billion dollar plastics companies that will slowly lose profitability and potentially thousands of jobs that could vanish. Oil is used to lubricate existing machinery for proper functionality. Oil is used for many different uses.

We will not have to wait 10 years, much less 100, before a severe economic recession occurs due to oil availability and pricing.

But don’t take my word on it. Do a serious study on “peak oil”. Or just wait a few years and see firsthand. My guess is this: just as with every single recession, depression, or shortage in history, 90% of the people are unprepared because they believe their standard of living will continue throughout their lifetime. I think we have a greater responsibility to our families and our communities to take information that is given to us in the form of warnings and research to verify the veracity of such claims. And if we deem those warnings to have merit, we owe it to ourselves to make preparations, not sit idly by and wait for minor or major calamities to happen to us.

I’m not blaming George Bush for the rising price of oil. I’m not blaming Saudi Arabia. I agree that we should have been making preparations 30 years ago. But no politician could have passed such expensive legislation before it was a crisis. The public wouldn’t approve the precautionary measure. They don’t think in terms of preserving the future until their present is in danger.

It’s interesting that you said that, because the same people who are telling you that we have 100 years of oil reserves left were telling the U.S. government in 1970-71 that reserves in U.S. soil would last us for the next 200 years. That same year, actual U.S. oil peaked and began the downhill slide, causing our country to seek out Arabian and Mexican oil to meet our needs (coinciding with increased U.S. interference in Middle Eastern affairs).

Unless you are a web marketer, you probably don’t spend much time on Digg, Reddit, Propeller, or Mixx. What you learn from these user generated news sources is that the title of a post is often overstated to generate initial interest. In other words, you don’t have to defend Obama here. The title got you here to read the post and the comments. It served it’s purpose.
