I was pretty proud of my predictive abilities for last night's 80th Annual Academy Awards. Except of course when the Best Picture award was announced. My dog skulked around for at least 10 minutes after my outburst because usually outbursts like that are because she's peed on the floor, not because No Country For Old Men won for Best Picture. I didn't realize how vehemently I didn't want it to win until it won. Even though There Will Be Blood was obviously my favorite, I found that I would have been happy with any other nominee winning. Right about now I’m wishing that I had thought up this whole Oscar blog thing in time to have been able to dedicate one blog per nominated film. I say that out of complete selfishness because I want this entire blog to be about There Will Be Blood and how absolutely, insanely, genuinely brilliant it is. I don’t want to have to spend any time on No Country For Old Men, but I told you I would, so I’ll keep my word.
I saw No Country For Old Men on a double feature day. The first feature was Lars and The Real Girl, which will be afforded its own blog one day, but suffice to say, I was extremely moved by that film in ways I still don’t fully understand. So maybe that’s part of the reason that I didn’t appreciate No Country For Old Men as much as the friends I went to see it with did. Continue Reading

I saw Atonement at a free screening before its initial release date. One of my friends had a free pass, but she couldn't go so she gave it to me. I don't know that I'm prone to Oscar vibes, but if I am, this one didn't give any off. Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed it, but I didn't leave the theater thinking, "Man, that's gotta get nominated for something."
