Politics: The Importance of Style Over Substance

Posted on 02 September 2008 by Lisa Pawlowski

The August 15 issue of Entertainment Weekly featured interviews with presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. It was a light interview in which the reporter asked questions like, “Who controls the remote in your home?” “What was the last movie you saw in a theatre?” “Who do you think made the best president in a TV show or movie?” Knowing the reporter wasn’t out to get them and that there wasn’t any wrong answer, the candidates felt free to be spontaneous and give readers a glimpse of how “normal” the men are without having an agenda to promote or talking points they had to stick to.

For instance, McCain likes ABBA. The first movie he ever saw was Bambi. And while he never voted for an American Idol contestant, his wife, Cindy, called in for Jordin Sparks of Glendale, AZ. He also thought that Dennis Haysbert on 24 made the best president and his favorite superhero is Batman.

2008 Democratic Convention Review

Posted on 29 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

Just in case you do not know, I am a pretty solid Republican, have been my whole life, so I would suggest you take my views on the Democratic Convention with a grain of salt.  As I watched Obama speech I must say that I loved everything he had to say.  I thought what he said about taxes was right, his approach with guns was right, I agree with him on the issue of gay people having the same hospital and tax benefits of heterosexual people, I liked how he talked about individual responsibility.  I liked everything he said and I doubt that the Republican Convention will be as well put together as the Democratic one was.

The problem for me is I do not think it can happen.  I do not believe that there is a single government program that any President, Republican or Democrat is prepared to cut no matter how poorly it is doing.  I do not think that the President or their staff will go line by line through the budget and cut the pork spending because one Senator’s pork is another Senator’s essential program.  I do not believe that our tax code will be reformed because everyone and I mean everyone, enjoys their own deductions and are so beholden to them that even if the new system is better they will feel like they are being cheated.

Give Obama a Chance on Thursday

Posted on 28 August 2008 by Jeff McCord

Culture Feast has several opinion articles written about this year’s highly-anticipated election year. We’ve seen articles that bash McCain and we’ve seen articles that bash Obama. To me, it seems there are definitely more anti-Obama articles on the internet, but then again I’ll freely admit I have bias. Supporting my opinion is the fact that Barack Obama’s camp had to literally create a website to dispel all the rumors and misinformation that has been plaguing him since he stepped into the political race.

With that said, I feel compelled to write on behalf of the Senator who is officially nominated for the Democratic party for the President of the United States. I was speaking with a few family members, all die-hard conservatives, about Barack Obama. It became so clear to me that this election seems different than any other election I’ve witnessed in my 31 years of age. Every election has had heated debates and has been filled with attacks, mostly all of them biased and inaccurate. But I think I can fairly debate that Obama seems to have more inaccurate and “urban legend-like” emails about him, his family and his performance than any other candidate that has run for President.

The Good News and Bad News About Joe Biden

Posted on 26 August 2008 by Michael Callaway

I could not be more relieved today when I heard that Joe Biden will be Barack Obama’s choice for Vice President.  My belief has been that there is a 100% chance that the next President will be either a Democrat or a Republican and it is 50/50 as to which side will win, I want to see the best candidates from both parties because one of them will be President.

Joe Biden is one of the members of the senate that I really respect, I always used to judge politicians on how well they did on Meet The Press with Tim Russert and Joe Biden always did well.  While I may not always have agreed with him I could understand where he came from because he was that good at explaining himself.  Another thing I like about him is he could admit when he was wrong and he answered the questions honestly.

Thanks for the Spam, Grandma!

Posted on 18 July 2008 by Nicholas Johnson

Grandma spams It's not often that I have the time to give my grandmother a shout-out, but  here it is. I want to give big props to my g-ma  for her helping me to reach my quest of 'World's Strongest Man in the Email-Deleting Finger Catagory'. Thanks to her, I have added millimeters of girth and amazing definition to my email-deleting finger.

On any given Monday, I could spend minutes a day deleting all of the unread emails that she has forwarded me. I don't mean any disrespect to my grandmother, but I pretty much got the 'Obama = terrorist' message in your first email. You know I am a well informed, educated man. I graduated from an accredited university (UNT '07); you were there.  I'm not amongst the undereducated masses that not only thought finishing high school was unnecessary, but also make up the majority of stereotypical Texans.  I just don't fall into that group of people that is swayed by propaganda whether it is political, racist, or fear based.

When Sorry Does Not Work

Posted on 16 July 2008 by Michael Callaway

There are many times that I need to apologize to someone, unfortunately, I suffer from a debilitating disease know as “foot in mouth” syndrome.  It is a terrible affliction where the words that come out of my mouth cause harm and pain when that was not their original intention.  If I like you, chances are I am going to tease you, in the course of teasing it has happened that the words that were meant to entertain actually made the person mad.  It is during these misunderstandings that the words “sorry” work very well.

I have perfected the art of the apology and usually do it rather well, I have had a lot of practice and as the old saying goes, practice does indeed make perfect.  In high school I used to keep a ready supply of apology cards on hand so I could write one out if need be.  I could offend someone in the morning, find out that I had done so by the middle of the day and have an “I’m sorry that I hurt your feelings” card in their hand before school was done.  I was an apology machine.

Obama Will Be the End of Us All

Posted on 20 June 2008 by DanielthePoet

Barak ObamaAre you ready to see history in the making? Get your popcorn ready (nod to T.O.). The world stage is about to take yet another step toward the End. Reading this post could be hazardous to your health, as this could get really ugly if certain people comment, so be prepared.

First, know this: I will vote for Barack Obama. But that's only because I believe John McCain to be irrelevant to the most pressing issues facing our country and the world.
