Writing these blogs has made me realize that almost every movie I see is in some way a chick flick. Sure there are the outliers like There Will Be Blood or Michael Clayton that I really enjoy, but by and large, it’s a pretty safe bet that I’m going to blog about something girly. And this one’s no different.
I did actually plan to NOT see Made of Honor. I do enjoy Patrick Dempsey’s role as Dr. Derek Shepherd, the sexy neurosurgeon who more than lives up to his McDreamy moniker on Grey’s Anatomy, but something about the little trailers that I saw for Made of Honor on my MySpace homepage just rubbed me the wrong way. Then one day I went to Yahoo, and I saw a blurb that said that Made of Honor had more going for it than TV’s sexiest doctor, and I got sucked in. I just couldn’t help it. I had resisted fate as long as I could.

TiVo and its other DVR friends have many advantages, not the least of which is the ability to fast forward through commercials. Without this ability, I might have found myself as fed up by the endless trailers for Definitely, Maybe as one of my friends who doesn’t have the luxury of recording live TV through her cable or dish box was.
Instead, I was thrilled when I found out it was still at the dollar theaters. And I was even more thrilled that the guy I’m dating was actually willing to go with me…to a chick flick. Apparently some “fairy tales” can come true. *wink, wink* Continue Reading

As previously mentioned in my Charlie Bartlett review, I love Robert Downey, Jr. So when I first saw trailers for Iron Man and saw how good he looked, you can only imagine how excited I was for May 2nd to come around. It also helps that even though the only comic books I’ve ever read are the Archie and Veronica kind, I really do enjoy the film adaptations of comic book stories. And maybe it didn’t take a rocket scientist to decide to use Black Sabbath’s Iron Man in the trailers, but rockin’ out to that at the end of every trailer made me want to see the movie even more.
Since I’ve never read any of the classic comics, I can’t speak to the authenticity of Iron Man as an adaptation. For that, you’ll have to ask Dr. Danger, a.k.a. Nicholas Johnson, resident Culture Feast comic blogger. However, I can tell you, from a Regular Jane’s perspective as a movie lover, that Iron Man was an entertaining 2 hours. Continue Reading

I had no interest in seeing The Human Stain, but adult human relations are dictated by compromise, so I said ok when my friend wanted to watch it, and as soon as I saw Gary Sinise's name in the credits, I was glad that I acquiesced.
Sinise's part is actually quite small, but not nearly as small as Ed Harris', and he had third billing. I wasn't all that impressed with Nicole Kidman's performance, but Moulin Rouge is one of the only films of hers that I did enjoy, and that had a lot to do with the cinematography, Ewan McGregor and music and not so much to do with her. It is my opinion that every movie lover has several films which they champion. In the course of a conversation with said movie lover, something will remind them of one of those films, and they’ll be bursting with the opportunity to tell you just how great their “all-time favorite film” is. NOTE: They have, at the very least, 200 “all-time favorite films.”
Equilibrium is one of my favorite films to champion. Since I saw it in 2002 or 2003, I can’t even begin to count the number of people to whom I’ve recommended it. It’s like The Matrix meets A Brave New World and 1984 but a million times better.

You know a film is forgettable when you open your DVD player a week later, find the DVD there and think to yourself, “Oh yeah, I guess I did watch that.”
That’s what I did with Breach. I remember seeing the trailers in theaters and thinking it looked intriguing enough, but as with so many films that I don’t get around to seeing at the theater, I completely forgot about it by the time it came to DVD. Continue Reading

I know this is going to be hard for most of you to believe, especially after my confession in the 27 Dresses film review, but I kind of hated Evening. I know! It seems ludicrous that I would even think to utter such a statement. It’s practically the very embodiment of a “chick flick,” but it just wasn’t convincing enough for me.
Toni Collette and Natasha Richardson play sisters who come home to say good bye to their terminally ill mother, played by Vanessa Redgrave, who is actually Richardson’s mother. Redgrave’s character, Ann, begins talking what Connie (Richardson’s character) thinks is feverish nonsense about “Harris.” The younger sister, Nina, played by Toni Collette, is intrigued to think that her mother had an alternate life that she never even hinted at with her daughters.
