Why Are People Anti-Twitter?

twitter1I have been using Twitter for about a year and a half now. I love it because it allows me to network with new friends, other bloggers and media professionals and keep a level of anonymity that social media sites like Facebook and Myspace lacks.

Yes you divulge personal details on Twitter, but it doesn’t give your “Tweeps” (aka followers) access to your photos and other personal information that you can find in Facebook. I like learning from the people I follow, and having the opportunity to share my work with more people than I can just by posting the link on Facebook. It widens my potential audience, and that is always one of my main goals.

Change Has Come to the White House

Someone on the White House marketing staff is very proud of himself/herself right now, and they should be. President Elect Obama’s website Change.gov was transferred over to WhiteHouse.gov during Obama’s inaugural address.

So in truth, Change HAS come to the White House. Probably via ftp.

President Obama’s staff is already busy blogging. Visit the White House blog to keep up with all the change.

Parents Don’t Get Next Generation Socializing

A few weeks ago, while driving in my car, I was flipping through the radio stations and acme across a DJ on a very angry rant.

This particular DJ was commenting on yet another report that kids today are overweight, under stimulated and just plain lazy. Sure, these facts are probably all correct; kids today spend too much time playing video or computer games, and not enough time doing anything physical, and as a result of that, combined with eating unhealthy, they pack on the pounds quickly. However, that is not what got me angry. The DJ proceeded to tell the listeners that today’s generation of kids do not socialize, that they spend too much time on Facebook, MySpace and MSN chatting with friends.

Blogging and Social Media Reshaped My Work

social media circleIf you were to have told me, about a year ago, that I would be using social media on a regular basis, I would have thought you were insane. To me, social media was nothing more than Facebook and MySpace, nothing more, nothing less. I thought that blogging was just for nerds and people with just too much time on their hands. However, after one of my PR courses (Strategies and Issues), I found myself slowly getting used to using, and understanding exactly what social media and blogging were. The course was very social media heavy; understanding the use of blogs and social media sites, how to effectively use social media today, and about half way through the course, each student had to create his and her own blog.

At first, I could not be bothered, and my friend Dara and I would just roll our eyes with sheer boredom. As she became less and less interested in the class, I became more fixated on blogging and the Internet. I was one of the very few students who updated their blogs more than once a week because I was genuinely interested in what I was writing about (Public Relations and Popular Culture).

Graduating from MySpace to Twitter

Twitter LogoI admit that once upon a time, my Myspace account owned me. Back when our only others options were Facebook, Xanga, or Livejournal, Myspace was the place to be. I decorated my profile, posted the million pictures, blogged the contents of my lunch, and yeah, I posted the infamous surveys.

Luckily, the social media realm seems to have grown up and has taken on a life of its own. Thanks to my good friend A.D.D, I have since healed from the shame of Myspace and moved on to other time consuming means of socializing… namely, Twitter!
