Great post, by the way. I just thought it was amusing that you are always the one to bring up something that gets my motor going. ;)

It's apparently my job (or calling) to be the antagonist. So here goes. I have often questioned whether the U.S. did the right thing. I look at the history of our country and I see the #1 nation to promote rebellion in every aspect of life. Independence taken to the extreme.

From my Christian upbringing, I believe that freedom is not freedom from oppression. True freedom is freedom to walk in joy, purity, uprightness, etc. It's a freedom to do good things, not a freedom to avoid something negative. There is a difference. Rebellion stems from campaigning against something, and does not establish a productive vision for the future. In the end, said rebellion only creates a massive space that demands to be filled. And fill it we have. To our greedy hearts' content.

Having said that, I think history will soon tell a different story about American influence on the world. I don't hate my country, for the record, but I don't advocate a good percentage of American "values."

If and when oil and gas prices rise so high that we can't afford to use them, our greedy consumer ways will catch up with us, and we will learn that there were other important virtues we somehow forgot to pursue.
