Valentine's day is more commercial than any other season ie Xmas, Mothers day etc and many people do not bother with it and other buy out of guilt, it's more for teenagers really. Retailers however need to keep cash flow coming to pay staff as sales for most retailers take a tumble in January until Valentines Day/Mothers day sales kick in.

I usually buy a card and take the missus out for a meal but don't spend the earth.

Like every holiday it has been commercialised so the fat cats can fill their pockets. But if you can see through all that and take it for what it actually means then anything else does not really matter. It's about showing someone you care.

[...] Jenni Hammitt thinks that Valentine’s Day is “super lame.” Maybe I’m the exception to the rule, but I just do not see why we buy into all of this. I think that at its inception, the holiday was a great idea. However, commercial greed took over and now it is this pink and red monster assailing pocketbooks, checking accounts and unwitting consumers each day. February 14 will just be another Saturday to me. I will go to work. I will spend time with my friends. That alone will make me happy. [...]
